One More for the Road

It's 1:41 a.m. and the jack-hammering has stopped. Now, I just hear pounding. There's a work crew in the street below our windows. I assume something urgently needs repair. Why else would they be here at this time of night? It's disturbing my beauty sleep.

It was around 1:10 a.m. and San Geraldo had just said good-night. He was having trouble falling asleep, but said he thought he was finally ready. I had just put down my Kindle because I could no longer keep my eyes open. A good sign. I turned off the light. I hadn't even removed my hand from the lamp when the noise started. I turned the light back on.

A QUIET NIGHT IN THE CITY.

San Geraldo looked out the balcony door and said, "You won't believe this. There's a road crew parked across the street." Of course, my first thought was, "I've got to get a picture." I did so and then closed the solid shutters on all the balcony doors. That helped quite a bit, but we won't be sleeping until they've completely finished.

AT LEAST THEY HAVE NOISE-BLOCKING HEADPHONES. WHERE ARE OURS?

I found San Geraldo in the kitchen mixing up his favorite late-night snack of bread and milk — using hamburger buns from the freezer. I don't think a snack can get much worse than bread and milk. I had fruit.

ONE BASIC DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SAN GERALDO AND ME.

It's now 2:07 a.m. There's a decent-sized hole in the ground, a vertical pipe is exposed and the men are working quietly. Dudo and Moose are hiding under my bed. I'm going to try and sleep now. If I'm not successful in my usual spot, I might join Dudo and Moose.

DUDO TRIED CRAWLING UNDER THE PILLOWS. BUT THAT DIDN'T HELP.

  1. And if the noise level isn't enough to keep you awake, the aggravation will keep your blood pressure elevated! Grrrr. Hope you can catch a siesta tomorrow!

Fortunately, no aggravation, since I didn't have anyplace I had to be early this morning. I had a nice siesta this afternoon!

  2. And such is my life.
When you work overnight and have to sleep during the day, this happens weekly.

I'm sure there was some kind of emergency. I really felt sorry for the people downstairs at El Sanedrín enjoying some "quiet" late-night drinks and conversation in the cool of the plaza. That was the end of that.

I was asleep by 3... and then Dudo came in to visit at 7! But siestas make many things better.

  4. Bread and milk? Take a bite of bread, take a sip of milk, repeat? or Smoosh up your bread in milk until it's soggy and then (gulp) eat it? What is this? :))

    I love Dudo :)

I hate the noise those guys are making in front of your apartment. How unfortunate :(

Per Jerry: break up bread into little pieces, dump in cereal bowl, sprinkle with sugar, smother in milk, eat.

      Still disgusting.

  5. Bread and milk? Ok, I get the bread part. But the milk part makes me a little queasy. I can't stand the stuff (except in recipes).

Apparently, I missed the most important ingredient: sugar. Ugh.

  6. Those guys need a PR agent - all it would have taken is for them to have worn processional clothes and stick a dirty great cross/statue of some biblical figure on the pickup truck and no-one would have minded the time or the noise.

Milk? Always makes me wonder who first wandered up to a slobbering, dung-covered ungulate and decided to try a bit of what could be squeezed out of the Marigolds dangling underneath! What other excretions did they try first? Ugh and then some!

Well, I didn't complain about being awakened by hundreds of sinners in sandals hoods. I guess I'd better not complain about a couple of sinners in sneakers and head phones.

Thanks for the milk imagery. I'll try to not think of it the next time I have some. Like I said, THANKS!

  7. No note in your mailbox in advance? How did the other neighbors react, or were they in deep sleep [went to bed before midnight]

No advance warning I'm sure. Clearly an emergency. The most unhappy people were those sitting outside having a quiet drink!

  8. 1:41a.m.? That's insane! Although that is about the time I wake up in the morning.

Between 12:30 and 2 is my normal bedtime. Last night it was 3. I'm sure they had no choice. At least I didn't have to get the kids up and out of the house at 8.

  9. Hope the rest of your night was more restful! I'm amazed that they would work so late. (Or is that so early?)

I wonder if Jerry would like graham cracker soup - which I used to adore about 60 years ago. And might still except I never have graham crackers in the house. It was just graham crackers broken up and milk poured over. A favorite aunt used to make it for me and my father, her brother, thought it beyond dreadful.

I am certain Jerry would like graham cracker soup. And he's going to read your comment and get all excited and probably go looking for graham crackers. (Or, what's even or likely... it's already in his repertoire and I just haven't witnessed it.)

  10. As a rule, I tend to follow the cats. They usually have the right idea.

Except for that time I got stuck in a really tall tree and had to call the fire department.

    Cats are such pranksters.

I have never heard of Blippy Bread. But I have a feeling I would hate it and Jerry would love it.

    2. I use that term because the bread is so soft, spongey, and flippy with a capital B!

  12. Next! Honestly , one would think we are joined at the hip!! Well actually.....
Now THAT noise would really get me crazy at that hour! I hate to be woken up mid sleep. But hey, you got some great photos out of the 'deal'!
I don't mind blippy things once in a while but it all depends.
